Short codes
A number short enough to remember.
A short code is a five- or six-digit number for business texting. It suits high-volume programs and campaigns people join by texting a keyword they saw on air or on a sign.
Two kinds of dedicated short code
Vanity short code
A number you choose, often one that spells a word or is easy to recall. It is leased for your program alone.
Random short code
A number assigned to you from those available. It works the same way and is leased for your program alone.
Four steps
How to get one
Plan the program
Decide what you will send, how people opt in, and the keywords they will use.
Lease the code
The short code is leased from the US short code registry, for a set term.
Carrier review
Each carrier reviews the program and its opt-in, HELP and STOP messages.
Go live
Once the carriers approve it, your keywords and campaigns can run.
Short code questions
How long does it take?
The carriers’ review sets the pace, and it varies. Ask us for a current estimate for your program.
What does a short code cost?
The registry charges a lease fee, and set-up and messaging are priced on top. Ask our sales team for a quote.
Do I need one?
Not always. A toll-free or local number suits many programs at lower cost.
